New Mexico: Where the Sky Is Giant, the Chili Is Mandatory, and Aliens Might Be Your Neighbors
Welcome to the Land of Enchantment, where the landscapes look like someone turned the saturation up to 200% and every restaurant comes with the same high-stakes question: “Red or green?”
It’s a place of wildly surreal beauty. You can slide down blindingly white gypsum dunes at White Sands, explore centuries-old adobe pueblos, and hike through high-desert mountains, all beneath a sky so enormous and blue it looks suspiciously photoshopped. And then there’s Roswell, where an entire town has built a thriving tourist industry around the possibility that something from outer space crashed there in 1947. Honestly, if you were an alien looking for a place to make an entrance, New Mexico is not a terrible choice.
There’s the green chile, which New Mexicans apparently consider a food group. It goes on burgers, eggs, fries, enchiladas, pizza, and pretty much anything else that stays still long enough. Ask for “red or green” without panicking, and you’ll be accepted as one of their own.
Between dodging roadrunners, discovering that the desert can be both freezing and scorching within the same day, and watching sunsets turn the mountains every shade of pink and orange imaginable, New Mexico is warm, weird, beautiful, and completely unforgettable. Bring lip balm, drink more water than you think you need, embrace the chile, and keep an eye on the sky. If you see something strange up there, just assume it’s a weather balloon. Or an alien. In New Mexico, both explanations are perfectly reasonable.
