Indonesia: 17,000 Islands, Volcanic Chaos, and Dragons That Want to Eat You
Welcome to Indonesia, an island-hopping paradise so massive that if you stretched it out, it would easily cover the distance from Seattle to New York.
It’s a country built on extreme drama. On one hand, you’ve got Bali, where people spend their days sipping smoothie bowls, dodging reckless scooters, and pretending to "find themselves" while getting judged by local monkeys. On the other, you’ve got Komodo Island, home to literal, giant, venomous prehistoric dragons that look at you like you’re a walking lunch special.
Then there are the volcanoes. Indonesia has over 120 active ones, meaning climbing a mountain at 3:00 AM just to watch the sunrise from a smoky rim is a totally standard Tuesday activity. Add in traffic in Jakarta—a city where you can age three years while sitting at a single intersection—and a local diet powered by sambal so spicy it will personally reset your soul.
Between diving with sea turtles in crystal-clear water, eating world-class Nasi Goreng for a dollar, and navigating island ferries that operate entirely on "vibes," Indonesia is loud, gorgeous, and endlessly fun. Just pack plenty of sunscreen, watch out for the monkeys, and remember: if a dragon starts walking toward you, sprint.
I lived in Indo for years!
