Missouri: Where the Humidity Is Heavy, the Barbecue Is King, and the Weather Has Trust Issues

Welcome to Missouri, the “Show-Me State”—because apparently Missouri residents won’t believe anything you tell them unless you can produce photographic evidence, a notarized document, and possibly a witness.

Missouri is a land of epic rivalries and even more epic portions. Kansas City will happily feed you enough barbecue to make you question whether vegetables were ever actually necessary. Meanwhile, St. Louis proudly serves Provel cheese and cracker-crust pizza—a combination so fiercely defended by locals that criticizing it may result in you being quietly removed from the family group chat.

In the middle, you’ve got the Ozarks: thousands of caves, beautiful scenery, and lakes where the unofficial state sport is sitting on a pontoon boat for six hours while insisting that you’re “going fishing.” The Ozarks also provide an excellent opportunity to discover that sunscreen, beer, and poor decisions float at roughly the same speed.
